Drain Cleaning

A floor drain that does its one job.

Basement, garage and utility floor drains collect silt, lint and rust. We jet or cable them clean, flush the trap and check that wastewater leaves quickly.

  • Typical visit: About one hour
  • Tools: Cable, small jetter, camera
  • Trap care: Water seal refilled and checked

The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

A floor drain waits months or years doing nothing, then has to work when a washer hose lets go or a storm drives water into the basement. Silt, lint, sand and sometimes rust build up in the trap, and the drain either smells like a sewer or fails to drain when it counts.

We lift the grate, clear the trap and run a cable or a jetter into the line behind it. Many Nashville basements have floor drains tied into the main line, so a blocked floor drain can be the first warning of a bigger sewer problem. We run water to confirm the flow and refill the trap to keep gas out.

Why homeowners choose it

Four things done right.

Trap cleaned

The part that fills with silt and lint is cleared out.

Line cleared

A cable or jet opens the pipe behind the grate.

Smell solved

A refilled water seal keeps sewer gas out.

Main line check

If it keeps backing up we look at the line behind it.

Good questions

Floor Drain Cleaning: common questions

Why does my basement floor drain smell?

The trap's water seal has probably dried out, which lets sewer gas rise. Pouring a quart of water in it, or a little mineral oil on top to slow evaporation, helps. A deeper smell may be buildup that needs cleaning.

Is a backing-up floor drain a sign of a bigger problem?

It can be. If the drain only slows, a local cleaning may be enough. If it backs up when other fixtures run, the main line likely needs cleaning or an inspection.
