Jetting and Root Removal

Old cast iron, back to a full-size pipe.

Rust and scale narrow older cast iron drain and sewer pipes. We cut the scale away with chain cutters and jetting so the pipe flows closer to its original size.

  • Equipment: Chain cutters, descaling nozzles, jetters
  • Typical visit: Two to four hours
  • Proof: Camera before and after

The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Cast iron was the drain pipe of choice for decades, and plenty of Nashville homes still have it under their floors and in their yards. Over time rust blisters form on the inside wall, trapping paper and grease until a four-inch pipe behaves like a two-inch one.

We descale with a chain cutter or a descaling nozzle, jet the debris out and look again with a camera. If the pipe wall is thick and sound, descaling can add years to its life. If the camera shows cracks, thin walls or collapsed sections, we say so, and the better path is repair or replacement.

Good questions

Cast Iron Descaling: common questions

Can all cast iron pipe be descaled?

No. Pipe with thick, sound walls can be. Pipe that is thin, cracked or collapsed should be repaired, relined or replaced. The camera inspection shows which category yours is in.

How long does descaling last?

It depends on how fast the pipe scales. Many lines stay clear for several years, and we recommend a follow-up camera pass to see how it is holding.
